Common Dental Procedures For Kids
Dental Examinations
Dental exams and x-rays allow dentists to anticipate dental issues and plan interventions early in childhood before they worsen. This can go a long way in preventing occlusal problems that could significantly impact a child’s self-esteem.
Education
Teaching good oral hygiene habits is a major part of a dentist’s duties at any stage of life. This is especially important with children because good early habits can follow them throughout their lives. By demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques, providing dietary counselling (so that good eating habits are formed), and giving habit-breaking tips, children and parents can be well-informed and make better decisions.
Fluoride Treatments
Where tooth decay is so deep that it extends to the nerve, pain and discomfort often occur. Pulp therapy removes the diseased part of the nerve while the healthy pulp tissue is left intact and medicated. This preserves the baby tooth and avoids the need for extraction.
Dental Fillings
These are used to treat teeth that have been affected by decay. The area is numbed, the damaged tooth structure removed, and a filling material placed to restore the anatomy and function of the affected tooth.
Pulp Therapy(pulpotomy)
Where tooth decay is so deep that it extends to the nerve, pain and discomfort often occur. Pulp therapy removes the diseased part of the nerve while the healthy pulp tissue is left intact and medicated. This preserves the baby tooth and avoids the need for extraction.
Extractions
This is done as a last resort in cases of severe tooth decay. In cases where a primary molar is removed prematurely, a space maintainer may be needed. Some extractions may also be needed for orthodontic reasons to alleviate crowding and facilitate proper tooth alignment.

Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS)
The Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS) is a government-funded program that helps families with the cost of basic dental services for their children. The scheme covers children aged 2-17 years and provides up to $1,026 over two calendar years for dental services such as examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canal treatment and extractions.
Families must receive certain government benefits or hold a current Healthcare Card to be eligible for the scheme. If you’re unsure if your family is eligible, our team at the reception can help you check. Simply fill out the form, and one of our friendly staff will get back to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
HOW CAN I PREVENT MY CHILD FROM GETTING CAVITIES?
One of the best ways to prevent cavities is to encourage your child to brush their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. You should also avoid giving them sugary snacks and drinks and make sure they see the dentist regularly. If your child does get a cavity, it is vital to have it filled promptly to avoid further damage to their teeth.
WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO TAKE MY CHILD TO THE DENTIST?
It is recommended that children see a dentist by their first birthday. However, you should schedule an appointment as soon as you notice any signs of tooth decay.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHILD SEE THE DENTIST?
Children should see the dentist every six months, or as their dentist recommends. This helps to prevent cavities and other dental problems.
WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DOES A KIDS DENTIST PROVIDE?
A kids dentist can provide various services, including examinations, X-rays, cleanings, sealants, and fillings. They can also offer advice on proper oral care, such as brushing and flossing.
DOES INSURANCE COVER KIDS DENTISTRY?
Most insurance plans cover at least some of the cost of dental care for children. However, checking with your insurer to determine what is covered is important.
