Veneers are one of those things that can genuinely transform a smile. But they’re also a decent investment and a permanent change to your teeth. So it’s worth understanding what you’re getting into before you commit.
If you’re looking at veneers near Waurn Ponds, you’re probably already imagining what your smile could look like. Maybe you’ve been hiding your teeth in photos for years. Maybe there’s one thing that’s always bugged you. Maybe you just want to feel good when you smile.
All valid reasons. So, let’s talk about what’s actually involved.
Porcelain vs Composite: What’s the Difference?
This is usually the first decision. Both are veneers, but they work differently.
Porcelain veneers are made in a lab, custom for your teeth. They look incredibly natural because porcelain reflects light similar to real tooth enamel. They’re strong, they resist staining really well, and they typically last 10-15 years, often longer.
The catch? They cost more, and you’ll need a couple of appointments. We prep your teeth, take scans, send them to the lab, and then you come back to have them fitted. There’s usually a bit of waiting while they’re being made.
Composite veneers are done right there in the chair. The dentist builds them up on your teeth using a tooth-coloured resin, layer by layer. It’s more affordable, often done in one visit, and if something chips later, it’s usually pretty easy to fix.
The trade-off is they don’t last as long. You might be looking at 5-7 years before they need replacing or touching up. They can also stain a bit more over time, especially if you’re a coffee person.
Neither option is “better.” It depends on your budget, your timeline, and how long you want them to last.
What Can Veneers Actually Fix?
Quite a lot, actually.
Staining and discolouration. If your teeth have gone yellow or grey and whitening hasn’t worked, veneers cover that up completely.
Chips and cracks. Pretty obvious. Veneers give you a fresh, smooth surface.
Gaps. We can make veneers slightly wider than your natural teeth to close small spaces.
Shape and size issues. Teeth that are too small, too pointy, or just oddly shaped can be evened out.
Minor crookedness. Veneers can’t move your teeth, but they can make them look straighter. For more serious alignment issues, you’d probably want to do orthodontics first.
What Veneers Can’t Do
I want to be straight with you here because some people come in with unrealistic expectations.
Veneers don’t fix major structural problems. If a tooth is badly broken or decayed, you might need a crown instead. If your teeth are significantly crooked, veneers alone won’t sort that.
They also don’t make your teeth invincible. You can still chip a veneer if you bite down on something hard or grind your teeth at night. They need looking after, same as your natural teeth.
And the process isn’t reversible. To fit veneers, we usually need to remove a thin layer of enamel. Once that’s done, you’ll always need veneers on those teeth.
The Process at Dove Dental
Here’s how it works when you come to us for veneers:
First, we have a proper chat. What’s bothering you about your smile? What are you hoping to achieve? Sometimes veneers are the answer. Sometimes there’s a simpler (or cheaper) option that would work just as well.
Then we do Digital Smile Design. This is where we take photos and create a preview of what your smile could look like with veneers. It’s not a guarantee of the exact result, but it gets us on the same page about what we’re aiming for.
We talk money. You’ll get a clear quote before you decide anything. We have payment plans if you don’t want to pay everything upfront. No hidden costs, no surprises.
If you want to go ahead, we book you in for the treatment. For porcelain, that’s usually two appointments. For composite, often just one.
Will It Hurt?
Most people find it pretty comfortable. We use local anaesthetic for the prep work, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Afterwards, there might be a bit of sensitivity for a few days, but nothing major.
If you’re anxious about dental work in general, let us know. We deal with nervous patients all the time and we can take things at your pace.
Looking After Your Veneers
Once they’re on, it’s not complicated. Brush and floss like normal. Come in for regular check-ups. Try not to use your teeth as tools (opening packages, biting nails, that kind of thing).
If you grind your teeth at night, we’d probably recommend a night guard to protect your investment.
Porcelain veneers resist staining, but the edges where they meet your natural tooth can still discolour a bit over time. Cutting back on coffee and red wine helps, but honestly, most people just live their life and it’s fine.
